A day for the herons

It was raining. It didn’t look that bad when I got into my van. By the time I got to the stoplight at US 17 it was pouring. I thought it was maybe a scattered show. By the time I got over the Sidney-Lanier Bridge the bottom had dropped out. Looking around I could tell the day was a wash.

While I was over on Jekyll causeway, I ducked, well more like bushwacked, into one of my favorite places. A couple of years ago Georgia Power did some work on a power pole. This opened a path to a pond. It is a pond that the Roseate Spoonbills love. I was not disappointed. There were Wood Storks, herons, and Roseate Spoonbills.

where are these nooks and crannies to see the spoonbills on Jekyll Causeway. We don't live here--only visiting for a few days and don't know our way around..Would be helpful to know where these cool locations are!

These nooks and crannies are hard to find, sorry to say. The one where the spoonbills like to hang out is behind a screen of holly. But don't fear there is an easier place to see them. This place is Gisco Point Road which is the road out to the casino boat. There is a pond just to the left after you go under the Sidney Lanier Bridge. I do have a booklet called Birdfinding in Coastal Georgia's Golden Isles. You can find it at Wild Birds Unlimited Nature Shop on Jekyll Island.
